A slippery slope!

This morning we had to be on the road early to drive 1 1/2 hours to the Athabasca Glacier that we actually passed yesterday on our way from Banff to Jasper. Being on the road early gave us the opportunity to spot some wildlife.

Once at the Athabasca Glacier we joined an Ice Walk. This was to involve a 3 hour walk upto and on the glacier.

This is our group heading towards the glacier all equipped with wet weather gear just in case of a little rain!

Hazel looking very pleased to be holding a piece of ice probably 600 years old. First time I have noticed how big her hands are!

The glacier and some dark clouds rolling in.

Working our way carefully up the glacier.

A crevasse. You can just see someone's boot in the top left so the crevasse is easily big enough to fall down.

Hazel not looking to comfortable next to the crevasse!

This is the glacier we walked on. You can also visit the glacier by a special bus called the Ice Explorer. There are two in the photo above to give you an idea of the size of the glacier.
Below I've taken a shot zoomed in a little so you can see them.

The guide had to cut short the Ice Walk, it had started to rain heavy and then there was an almighty crash of thunder. We where told that it was not a great idea to be stood on a massive block of ice soaking wet in the middle of a thunder storm so we should make our way back down. Nobody argued about leaving the glacier but it had been a great experience.

Athabasca Falls, the melt water from the glacier.

We returned to Jasper and did a trail that took us through the woods above the town.

When we first started the trail we did not see another person so we where constantly looking round for elk and bears but we soon came across other hikers, joggers and mountain bikers.

Sunny afternoon over Jasper quite a contrast from our morning on the glacier.
